Frocks and Frou Frou - Moomintroll Top & Mustard Skirt Frocks and Frou Frou - Moomintroll Top & Mustard Skirt Frocks and Frou Frou - Moomintroll Top & Mustard Skirt

Moomintroll Tee: Uniqlo

Skirt: Modcloth

Cardigan: Gorman

Shoes: Chie Mihara

Getting PLENTY of wear out of this mustard yellow skirt, and honestly I’m a heartbeat away from buying it in half a dozen other colours. The mustard yellow plays well with so much in my wardrobe, and the style dresses up and down easily.

I’ve worn it today with a novelty t-shirt featuring the Snorkmaiden from the fabulous Swedish kids book series “Moomintrolls”. Uniqlo does these regular collaborations with artists, brands, or designers – one of my favourite loose-fit tees was from a Uniqlo collaboration with Karen Walker last year – but I’ve learned that they come and go VERY QUICKLY, so you need to jump on them as soon as you see them in-store.

What with my love of kids books I was pretty chuffed to find Moomintroll clothing in adults sizes.  They’re clearly having a bit of a renaissance at the moment, and I’ve spotted the books and merchandise in some of my favourite independent bookstores (especially The Little Bookroom who seem to have been single-handedly championing their return for the past five years).

Like my long-gone Grug t-shirt the Snorkmaiden is a sneaky little nod to Those In The Know who grew up with the quirky inhabitants of the Moominvalley.

Did you ever read the Moomin series?

  1. MOOMINS! I have this exact T-shirt and every one Uniqlo had in my size. Moomins are a family tradition, both my parents had them has children, one in japanese no less, then shared them with the siblings and I. We even visited Moominland when we were in finland.

  2. Now I simply just HAVE TO correct you 😀 Moomintrolls – or “Muumit” as we call them here in Finland – are not swedish, the person who invented them, Tove Jansson (who by the way would have turnt 100 years old this year) was finnish 🙂 And well, when they were created they were not kids book series and the original books and comics written and drawn back then were all for adults. Well, what’s important, is that these days both children and adults love them all the same ^_^ I adore Muumit and Tove. If you read the original books you can find a lot of hidden philosophy and a lot of thought in them.

I love your blog and style! Actually this might be the first time ever I leave a comment here… I hope you have a wonderful rest of the week 🙂

  3. I love that Modcloth skirt, I hemmed it a few inches through. It was a bit boxy and overwhelming on me.

One of my favorite combos is wearing it with a mint button down shirt.

  4. I love Moomins! After seeing this I just went over to the uniqlo site and ordered my daughter a moomin dress and tee for Christmas- I can start to build on her love for the moomins too! (Sadly I don’t think the tees will fit me!)

  5. You look lovely in those colours!
My son and I love the Moomin books. Actually we visited the very cool Moomin shop in London in 2012!! I’m heading over to Uniqlo now 🙂

    1. Oh I am a bit surprised Moomin is perceived as a “girl thing” for kids. Just spent ages looking for the tshirts and then realised they were in the girls section only. Gendering and kids clothes drives me crazy!!!!

  6. I love the Moomins! Comet in Moominland and Finn Family Moomintroll were two of my favourite books when I was little (and still are!). It had never occurred to me that I could be wearing Moomins…must try to remedy that omission…. 🙂

  7. Ooohh… I love the Moomins so much! Especially the comics, because therein you can find a lot of humour for adults, too 🙂 This little ones have such a likeable philosophy of life.

You look lovely in that outfit. I like your blog and your style a lot. By the way, if your nickname on facebook tells the truth: you look ten years younger than you are!

  8. You do know the world is celebrating Tove Jansson’s centenary this year?! That would be why her books and merchandise are everywhere 🙂

  9. I love the way you’ve picked out the mustard yellow in the tee and teamed it with that gorgeous mid calf skirt! That is my favourite length of skirt too!
