All that?

I’m a sucker when it comes to the Next Big Thing, and several months ago the Next Big Thing was “Not Your Daughter’s Jeans”. As seen on current affairs programs Australia-wide they promised jeans that sucked your tummy in and lifted your butt with sacrificing comfort or style. It’s a big claim, and one I was eager to try out for myself.
So, Tummy Tuck Jeans? Are they all that?
Weeeelll…. Yes and no. It really depends on what you want out of your jeans. If you want jeans that are so comfortable you could conceivably wear them to bed, and still get a decent night’s sleep then these could be the jeans for you. If, on the other hand, you wanted jeans that look young and hip and sexy, them probably give them a miss.
Not Your Daughter’s Jeans are made with twice as much Lycra as most women’s jeans – the result is a snug stretchy fit that’s as comfortable as your favourite pair of sweatpants. When buying NYDJ’s it’s always advisable to size down, down, down. I was given a size ten to try on in store, and the actually did up! I haven’t been a size ten since, well, since I was ten.
So when I’m looking for jeans to wear on a long-haul drive or if I’m feeling a bit sore and sorry for myself I’ll pull out my Tummy Tuck Jeans. But I wouldn’t dream of wearing these jeans without a long top over them.
See, the problem with Not Your Daughter’s Jeans, is that they should actually be called “Your Nana’s Jeans”. These babies are high-waisted to the max, and have little back pockets that make my wide, Asian, flatbutt look like the side of a truck. And to be honest, they don’t do a lot of lifting or flattening. Here’s a side-by side comparison with my Embody jeans:
NYDJ – note the high waist
Embody: A much more youthful low-rise
NYDJ: Why, is that the new DHL delivery van?
Embody: Oops, no. It’s an ass
NYDJ: Poochy belly
Embody: identical poochy belly
Where Not Your Daughter’s jeans can come into handy though, is for those people you just can’t find jeans that won’t get gappy around their waists. I’ve never had to hitch a pair of NYDJ’s, I’d never have to wear a belt with them. Because of the ample Lycra they just hug the body without stretching out or getting loose.
NYDJ Tummy Tuck jeans can cost upwards of $150 in Australian stockists, but as ever it’s a much better bet to find your right size in store, and then snap up a pair on eBay. If you can’t find a stockist locally I would recommend ordering up to two sizes smaller than your usual pant size.

  1. I have to agree, your butt looks WAY better in the Embody jeans. High raise jeans/pants might give good muffin reduction but they tend to make people look like their bum goes on forever

  2. LOL! Not at all, Sarah! Hence the NEVER wear NYDJ’s without a long top. I’ve seen them on wee skinny little butts and they manage to make those look droopy and flat, too

  3. “Your Nana’s Jeans”, LOL. I must admit that I had a similar reaction when I looked at the NYDJ site. I thought it possible that I didn’t have my style goggles on that day. Clearly I did, though, LOL.

BTW, I followed the link to your blog from the Vogue forums. As a newbie I can’t post there, although I’ve tried. I can’t seem to get past the moderation process!

  4. Hi frumpy! Thanks for your comments, and welcome! Sit tight with Vogue – they take FOREVER to approve you, but it’ll happen!

  5. Ooo, that’s my exact problem with jeans (too gappy in the waist). I may have to look into a pair!
