Tartaned Up

Top: Dorothy Perkins

Cardigan: Eugenie Cashmere

Skirt: Vintage via eBay

Tights: mesop

Boots: Duo Boots

This is the second vintage tartan skirt that I “accidentally” bought from eBay. It’s even more schoolsy than the first, and I wore it with polkadot tights, knee-high boots, and a cashmere cardigan that I’ve sewn up the front so the buttons don’t gape.

It’s still pretty uniform-esque (I think it’s my beloved peterpan collar) so I added a cute vintage brooch that I bought of Etsy months and months ago:

Brooch: Vintage viaΒ You In Mind

It’s a little goldtone gumball machine, and the “candy” inside the dome actually moves around! It’s vintage, but they must be pretty common because I found this one on Etsy for a steal after getting pipped at the post trying to buy an identical one off eBay. A cursory search on Etsy brings up this one, and this one.

In a pretty decent act of Fail, I wore this brooch to the dentist. He laughed when he saw it, but I felt like a bit of an idiot. What? Sweetooth? Me?

  1. oh i do love kilts and peter pan collars – i think i may have to get one for the winter, i think they are timeless, you look amazing as ever x

  2. Ooh you look so warm and toasty! So sick of Melbourne’s weather. It’s made me realise I do not have enough warm clothes but I do have lots of summer dresses! You look fantastic as usual x

  3. I really love this outfit, it’s the kind of thing that appeals to me. For some reason I am drawn to schoolgirl and librarian-like looks. I think you’ve pulled this off well, it doesn’t look costumey. That brooch is TO-DIE-FOR! Thanks for linking me up!

Can you tell me if you hand sew or machine sew your cardigans so they don’t gape? I want to have a go at that but don’t have a sewing machine…

    1. Very cute, Marnie! Thanks for the link! I have a brooch similar to the skipping girl one (but in enamel) and I love wearing it. The come fly brooch is amazing! I might have to buy it, lol!

  4. Hi Lilli, I’m pleat-obsessed and heading down the tartan path. This is perfect timing cos I’ve literally just put my collection up on my blog. I find the best skirts in church op shops and places like Savers, in sizes about 3 or 4 times bigger (label wise) than what I wear. Most of the time they look barely worn. Go pleats, go tartan! You look lovely as usual and I looove that brooch πŸ™‚

    1. Oh, your skirts are AMAZEBALLS! I rarely have luck at Savers – everything is usually a bit too small. The turquoise plaid skirt is INCREDIBLE! I hope you’ve found a way to wear it πŸ™‚

  5. Hi Lilli,

Ever since I saw this outfit I have been searching for a gumball brooch with moving gumballs, static candy will not do. I must not have been the only one. I think your post has generated a worldwide shortage. The search goes on.

    Thanks for the wonderful blog.

    Cheers,
    Trish
