Did you all catch the Australian Premiere of Mad Men last night on SBS?
For those of you who don’t own a TV, or have been living under a rock for the last year or so, Mad Men is the TV series credited with bringing the bombshell fashions of the 50’s and 60’s back into vogue.
Yep, you can thank costume designer Janie Bryant for the welcome return of floral dresses, high waists, full skirts and curvy silhouettes. Huzzah!
Obviously I was terribly excited to finally see it premiere, so in honor of Joan Holloway – the most scrumptiously lush secretary on TV – today I decided to wear my most “steno pool” suitable sheath dress. Just show me to the typewriter! (Incidentally, favourite line of the episode: Joan [whipping the cover off a massive old typewriter] “Don’t be overwhelmed by all this technology. It looks complicated, but the men who designed it made it simple enough for a woman to use”. Comedy gold, man.)
i think the dress would look more bombshell-y with snug black sweater underneath and a choker or short pendant necklace, drawing attention to your face and neck, and the shape of your torso. just my thoughts, somehow the floppy bow, all the loose material of the shirt, the double strand of pearls seem too crowded to me.
Ooh I could see that dress with a snug cardi and brooch. Yay for Mad Men!
Lilli! I need some advice. For some reason Vogue Forums won’t let me post, so I’ll ask here. I know you’ve ordered from Dorothy Perkins before, I’m wondering what their sizes are like? As far as I was aware, UK sizes are one down from AUS sizes. But the DP site measurements imply otherwise? What’s your experience been like?
Cheers! Kyee
Hey Kyee! I found that the size chart’s pretty much spot on – you can probably size down on the size chart for stretch/jersey items, but otherwise I’ve found the measurements they give are a good indicator of the size you’ll need.
Hi,
It’s the first time I come to your blog and I love it.
Congratulations for these outfits, really cute !
About “Steno Pool”, I think I would add some red accessories, a scarf or necklace maybe…
Please forgive me if I made some mistake in language, but I’m on the other side of the world (France)… 😉
See you soon !
I love the classic look of your dress! I tried to do some searching to find decent fitting dresses for the summer and came across this summer dress from Liz Claiborne.
Did you know that Isaac Mizrahi designs for Liz now? AND that there is a NEW PLUS-SIZE LINE?!? It has a lot of really cute pieces too. I’m so excited!
I also noticed that Liz Claiborne’s new ads actually feature full figured women! I found them on the website. LizClaiborne.comBravo Mizrahi and Liz Claiborne. It’s about time more mainstream brands considered full-size women!
Hi Anon and, er, Anon! I love your ideas – I have to admit I bought the dress in part because I thought that it had lots of different potential looks – I definitely plan to wear it with a black sweater underneath… as soon as it gets cool enough, anyway.
SingaporeSling – Oh, I have such a weakness for red accessories, too. Great ideas, thanks!
Hey Newbie: I heard about the Isaac Mizrahi range a few months ago – the dress looks lovely! That sweetheart neckline’s so flattering. I totally agree that more mainstream designers need to embrace us curvy’s. Still, it’s good to hear that things are (albeit slowly) changing!
