Frugal February: De-Boned

Dress: Dream Diva
Shrug: City Chic
Leggings: My Size
Shoes: Wittner
I bought this dress to wear on New Years Eve and loved it, but all night long the boning in the sides were cutting in under my underarms and being generally very annoying.
They didn’t seem to be doing any actual good – the dress pretty much held itself up anyway – so I got my trusty sewing scissors and did a bit of impromptu dress surgery.
The “bones” were just little strips of plastic, and the edges were cut straight, which explains why the corners were so damn prickly – without them the dress is very comfortable and, teamed with a shrug, I can even wear it with a bra… mmnnnn…. practical….

  1. The plastic boning should always be rounded off, and metal boning sanded and tipped! Usually plastic boning is less for holding up and more for smoothing out. But the dress is still cute either way!

  2. Hi!

I instantly fell in love with the dress you're wearing and tried checking out the shop you said it came from. Figures that they don't ship to Germany, much less that I can even access the side for some stupid reasn. *sigh*

    Anyway…
I am Alexa from Germany and I just only recently found your blog, but I really adore your style and it makes me so happy to see, that even as a voluptuous woman, you can dress beautiful, sexy and trendy. I admit that I've been really self-conscious about my size for a long time, but I am coming around and finding myself happier with my curves every day.

And this new found happiness isn't a result of only my growing self-esteem, but also a result of visiting blogs such as yours and seeing how beautiful women of all shapes and sizes can be and look. And for that I am really grateful!a

    Sincerely,
    Alexa

  3. I love this dress paired with the shrug! I have some boning in some of my dresses that I hate too! But unlike you, I have ZERO sewing skills. I will probably end up cutting the entire dress up if I try to remove the boning!

  4. it's a cute dress and I really like the idea of adding a shrug for practicality's sake. Will have to see if I can get my hands on a sewing pattern for one. Thanks for the inspiration!

  5. Love this frock! I perform the aforementioned surgery nearly every time a new bra has boning on the sides XP.

  6. That's what I thought too, Jennifer – I was surprised when it came out and it was so roughly done 🙁

    Hi Alexa,
Oh! I'm so glad you're enjoying the blog! I just love hearing stories like yours! It's annoying that Dream Diva doesn't ship to Germany – you could try ringing the store – most places will do a special post if you ask nicely. Otherwise, I'd be happy to ship it onwards to you in Germany if you're desperate!

Thanks, Bowsnhearts! I got a bit nervous myself when I got the scissors out, but slow and steady wins the race 'n all that 🙂

Shrugs are really easy, A-C. I've seen some that are basically a tube of fabric.

    Thanks, Lone Gofio

    Thanks, Vicky & Monique 🙂

  7. I luff, luff, LUFF this outfit! I <3 the shrug – I have the black and the purple one (although I must admit to only wearing the purple one with black. I must find some more adventurous ideas for it). I noticed City Chic now have it in blue as well….

  8. Cuuuute! Can't go wrong with a print like that, and I really like how the leggings just peep out from under the hem.

I HATE when designers are lazy with boning. It's seriously a 5-second job to snip & sand the sharp edges back.
