Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you’ve all enjoyed the end of 2012, and are looking forward to a fun 2013.

2012 was a challenging year for me, full of ups and downs. I got married, I got promoted, my best friend had a gorgeous baby and I got to visit Japan for the first time. But there’s also been my sister’s diagnosis, which rocked the family to the core.

2013 is already shaping up to be a big year, but The Sophisticate and I spent at least the first day of it relaxing at home after a week of hectic travel hither and thither to see family both here in Victoria and up in the ACT.

I managed to get outrageously sunburnt in Canberra (life lesson: don’t drive your Dad’s convertible on a cloudless day unless you’re wearing sunscreen. No, not even for ten minutes) so I’ll be wearing high necks until the fetching seatbelt tan-line has faded from my cleavage. Shame, because I have a lovely new Sohomode dress I’m dying to show off!

This dress is a favourite on hot summer days, because of the open feature back. (Fortunately this wasn’t the dress I was wearing when I got sunburnt, or it might have resulted in a very peculiar tan)

I always like to wear this dress belted, so today teamed it with my DIY’d bow belt, which always teams up so nicely with teal ballet flats.

My hair’s inching towards being long enough to put up again, so I celebrated by wearing the great vintage earrings I picked up on Etsy.

  1. Happy new year from Germany!!!
You look gorgeous and I really like your hair. Could you please explain us, how you did your hair?

    Many thanks!!!!

  2. Oh I love your earrings so much! Good luck with the sunburn, I tend to end up with the weirdest sunburn, I’m so pale and there’s always one day I forget wearing sun cream and it’s usually when I have an odd shaped collar on!

  3. Oh the cut out in the back of the dress makes it go from nice to super super cute! I love unexpected cuteness. Also, I’m with Fiona, you make me want to cut a fringe.

  4. Happy New Year! Hope 2013 is just lovely, including nothing but good news for yr sister.

Also, I second the hair how-to request! I’m considering going longer again, & cute up-do’s like that look like what I want! Tips, please! And I think I’m going to have to get a dress from Kay Em Kay this year. Every time I see this dress I just want one so badly! I think 2013 will be the year! 🙂

    1. Thanks Molly – I might try and do a hair tutorial some time soon, but basically all I did was french braid two little strips down each side of my face, then join them up in the middle at the back of my head with a bun!

  5. Wishing that 2013 is a healthy one for you and your family with good happy news for your gorgeous sister.
I live summer but hate the whole plaster myself in sunscreen all the time, feel icky and greasy and then accidentally miss a bit or forget and get burnt 🙁 not fair! I once ended up with a hand shaped sun runt cheek and I was a student working at myer- all these older women thought I was being hit by my partner! But no it was just sloppy sunscreen application!
Gorgeous dress- I love the cut out heart, and your simple styling to show it off! So the heart is cut high enough not to show your bra- that’s my main concern?

    1. Thanks Shell! The secret with the heart was that I put on a bra, then measured how low the heart could go and gave that measurement to Kay at KayEmKay. And when it arrived it was perfect!

    1. Thank you, Melissa 🙂
I do love me some ballet flats. I’m thinking of going back to the shop and getting another pair in this same style – I really like the snub nosed toe on it.

  6. Hello! Just saw this post and ADORE the earrings with the outfit! LOVE this blog as a fellow curvy gal, there are just not enough of them 🙂 = gathersalot = Kris
