A Spot of Bother

Dress: Bettie Page Clothing

Shoes: Wittner

Belt: I Will Fly

This dress is the only piece of clothing I have left from my trip to America in 2010. It’s weathered wardrobe cull after wardrobe cull and it’s still one of my favourites.

Bettie Page Clothing do some great dresses, though admittedly they sometimes push the envelope too far into “period costume” territory for my own comfort. At the moment I’ve got my eye on their Alika Dress, which Rebel Wilson wore to devastating effect at the premiere of Paul in 2011. It seems like it’s a similar shape – perhaps a little fuller in the skirt – with that delicious bow at the waist taking it from “nice” to “niiiiiiiice!”

It’s the details that seal the deal for me with dresses. This one? It was “nice” when I saw it on the rack, then I turned it around: “niiiiiiiiice”

I’m such a sucker for a feature back.

Originally it came with a plain red belt, but I thought I’d give it a go with the elasticised heart belt that I bought from I Will Fly on Etsy.

P1020793_2Quite successful I thought, but in retrospect I would have liked this outfit better with some bold accessories: red shoes, some bangles, a headband or something. The dress – red polkadots on white – looks a little washed out without the extra colour.

  1. I LOVE the Alika dress. Have coveted it since Girl With Curves Tanesha wore. So gorgeous. And the polka dots dress is great too. Though after visiting Betty Page in Las Vegas I was a little disappointed by the fabrics.

  2. I have the alika in red and it is as lovely. However i find the bust a little roomy……which is bizarre since i wear an e. Possibly better underwear would fix it.

  3. Love the dress on you. Your hair looks lovely and so appropriate for a hot summer day (it’s about 18 degrees here in the NY area) Please give us a hair tutorial on how you achieved that look.

  4. I have the Alika circle dress by Bettie Page in navy with the pink crinoline underneath. It fits me like it was made for me- room in the bust, small waist, full skirt. I wore it to my sister’s wedding last weekend and twirled the night away. Get into it!

  5. I do love the back- I agree, it takes the dress from pretty to something spesh! I love the belt and keep on checking but I Wil Fly hasnt had any belts for ages…..maybe I should ask her to make some more cos the heart belt it so cute!

  6. Love your dress! And ermergerd! I just bought a white full circle Alika online tonight! Possibly my potential wedding dress…

  7. Very pretty dress, just perfect for a sunny day (a distant dream here in England, as its been sooo cold!). The belt is fab, I really want to get one of those elasticated belts. So much easier to wear than normal leather ones. I agreed with a lot of the others above that your hair looks lovely. Stunning from the back to match the lovely back of the dress!

    1. She’s now making and selling her belts on stay due to ‘popular demand’- which I’d say happened after this blog!!!

  8. Hell yes, I have been pining for that Alika dress since I first saw it 🙁 I know what you mean about the clothes looking like costumes, I find the same goes for Collectif in the UK sometimes.

  9. I love Bettie Page dresses, I have the Ashley circle, and am saving up for the Secretary Circle in black 3/4 sleeve. I also have the Captain-and yes it is very costumey.
I love that dress on you, it looks very cute. I would keep it as well!
