Dress: Asos Curve

Belt: DIY

Shoes: Chie Mihara

I’ve noticed this bold black and white striped bodycon dress from Asos has been doing the rounds in the Plus Size fashion blogosphere lately.

I saw it a few months ago in Asos’s Plus section “Curve”, and deliberated over whether or not to buy it. I’d wanted a striped tee-dress for some time, but hadn’t had a lot of luck with them in the past. One I’d bought from Dorothy Perkins was just way, way, WAY too short and a thin fabric to boot. Another that I bought from Sportscraft seemed promising in the store, but when I got it home I decided it made me look brick-like in shape.

Neither of them made it onto the blog.

I decided to save my pennies, and hold off buying a third striped tee-dress that I wouldn’t ever wear. But when I started to see other plus-size bloggers wearing the Asos striped bodycon dress, I started to have second thoughts.

Then they emailed me a 20% off code, and just to prove what a hopeless case I am I used it to buy the dress.

By this point Asos was out of stock of my size, so I sized up, and to be honest I actually feel more comfortable in the larger dress. It probably has too much loose fabric to really be “bodycon” and it doesn’t really give me the va-va-voom hourglass shape that I crave, but it’s a nice comfortable piece to wear.

It’s a medium thick jersey – definitely not with the structure of a ponti, but better than a t-shirt. It holds its shape well throughout the day, but I did need to add a slip underneath to feel confident.

As the weather starts to cool, I’m looking forward to teaming it with brightly coloured cardigans and opaque tights, but for now it works well on inbetweenie days with heels and a belt for fancier occasions and over leggings with a scarf or a statement necklace for casual.

  1. thanks to you I am the proud owner of two striped tees 😉 and yesterday I thrifted gorgeous trousers (mostly viscose and wool) by cacharel in my size (miracles happening!)
    huge HUG!

  2. I think it does give you a bit of an hourglass shape. It’s really evident in the first picture. It’s a really a great, classic looking dress. Stripes like that are my kryptonite.

  3. This is my favourite dress on you! It wouldn’t be nearly as lovely on you in a size smaller. This one’s perfect. I agree with other commenters that I think it does give you shape.

  4. It looks fab on you! I keep looking at that and the blue one ASOS has just released but I can’t really size up in ASOS as I’m at the biggest size, and I’m not sure I’m confident enough to show off ALL my rolls (especially my VBO!). SO for now, I shall just admire it on other bloggers.

Wishing you and the husband a Merry Christmas and fantastic 2013. x

    1. Thanks Claire – I hope you have an amazing Christmas, too! Keep your eyes peeled, I wouldn’t be surprised to see other permutations of this dress appear in other shops soon, considering how successful it’s been at Asos

  5. I think the dress looks perfect! It doesn’t look too loose or shapeless at all – I think it looks flattering & comfy & stylish! And the blue belt is just right. Love it! Stripes are my very favorite pattern. 🙂

  6. May I ask what kind of a slip you wear with this dress? I have it but don’t feel especially comfortable in it. You look fabulous in it!
