On Your Bike

Cardigan: Big W

Top: JayJays

Skirt: Eliza Parker

Shoes: Wittner

Oh! Here’s one I prepared earlier (when it was much warmer, obviously!)

I think this was probably the last warm day we’re going to have for a while. After a lacklustre summer Melbourne’s descending into a very cool autumn, and what’s likely to be a most wintery winter. I’ve hauled out the last of the cool-weather clothes that were left in storage, and I’m about ready to pack up my short sleeves and summer dresses, but my bare arms and legs got this one last outing.

I’m channeling the 1950’s in my a-line skirt, polkadotted cardigan, and my Nana’s red bead necklace.

What really makes the look is the fabulous headband/hairtie which I received from the downright lovely Donna at Marscapony

Donna sent me this great bicycle print hair-tie which has been made with a core of galvanised wire, which means I can mould it to shape my head. This is an excellent thing, as I’ve never had any luck keeping soft fabric headbands on without having to use bobby pins.

Check out the webstore to see Donna’s wonderful range of beautiful fabrics.

  1. Hi Lilly,

I have been following your blog for a while now and have loved seeing your take on different styles and introducing me to many more designers and shops! but i have noticed that over the last 6 months or so your language has changed and now you seem to be endorsing some products that are sent to you – i imagine that this is because vendors recognize the number of followers that you have, which you are to be commended on, but i am feeling a bit sad that things are changing and now wonder if all of the items you promote on your blog are because you really like them or is it because you were given it for free, or you may be benefiting from these sorts of unofficial endorsements.

Don’t want to sound discouraging, just wondering if you should maybe consider adding disclosures where needed.

    Thanks,

    Anna

    1. Hi Anna,
I’d hate for anyone to imagine that I’d endorse a product on the blog that I didn’t wholeheartedly believe in myself. 90% of my wardrobe is bought, and I always try to let people know during the blog post if something has been gifted (such as the peplum top from Eliza Parker) but I can certainly spell it out if readers would prefer that.
I do assure you though I wouldn’t promote something that I didn’t believe in. The bottom line is that it would be ultimately self defeating – if I raved about something that was actually pretty dreadful people would stop listening to my recommendations and Frocks and Frou Frou would quickly become a wasteland!
I made the decision years ago that this blog would be ad-free because I’ve seen blogs that have gone down the path of product placement and cash-for-comment, and I’ve stopped reading them myself. That said, I’m writing a fashion blog on a publishing salary, so if I’m offered a free item to review I won’t usually say no. I can guarantee though that my good opinion cant be bought.
I take my credibility very seriously and if I ever hear back from readers who have been disappointed by the service or products from stores I’ve recommended I’m very upfront about that the next time I blog.
Ultimately I’m just another consumer like you guys. I buy almost everything myself, and I’ve had wins and losses. The losses just don’t make it on to Frocks and Frou Frou.

      1. This is another Anna’s perspective, and I have never had the feeling that your blog was in any way “commercial” (for lack of a better word…), whereas I have noticed in the case of some other blogs that they only seem to review items/brands that have been given to them. While I instinctively find that a bit off-putting, I am not even sure if it is an appropriate reaction. I have no ethical problem with fashion magazines receiving goods they review for free, why should this be different for a fashion blog? The reason that I prefer blogs such as yours to magazines is that I find you so much more relatable than the models in magazines. And also, of course, because I admire your personal style and enjoy your writing. Every new post is a delight for me and I certainly have never felt that your credibility was at all questionable.

        Also, awesome headband!

  2. One of my favourites from you in a while… and I’ve liked what you’ve posted lately a lot, so that’s saying something 🙂 I LOVE the hairtie… I wish I had a little more spending money at the moment so I could pick one up, as my attempts to do a similar thing have failed due to, as you mention above, the need to secure with a billion bobbies. What a genius idea to put wire in 😀

  3. i love your style, this blog. i read it very often.
    i am a frock- and skirt-girl, too. 🙂

    greetings from germany.

  4. Hello Lilli,

you look wonderful. I like red on you. And I also need more (really) more cardigans. Such an easy way to make and change an outfit.

  5. I can’t believe you made headband-that-resembles-headscarves-worn-by-back-in-the-day-housewives-when-they-went-out-without-having-done-their-hair chic! You have a gift, there’s no doubt about it.

  6. You really know how to put together an outfit! I wish I had your sense of style. I always cheat by simply donning a dress + heels, I am not terribly good at matching a skirt to a top to a necklace to a headband! Speaking of headbands, yours is absolutely gorgeous (and I have no problem whatsoever that it was gifted to you, as I really feel that it’s clear that you only endorse things that you truly love). xxx

    1. Thankyou! Sometimes I worry that I’m too matchy matchy with my outfits, but you should never underestimate how fab a simple dress paired with heels is too!

  7. Fab outfit yet again! I am sorely, sorely tempted to get that Eliza Parker skirt, I swoon over it every time I see it on you!

Sadly, I am bankrupt after I splurged on two dresses at Diana Ferrari. In fairness, one of them was 75% off but I still somehow spent $200.

I am putting myself on a clothes ban for the rest of winter. I have had shockingly little self control lately. I blame you and your beautiful outfits, they make me want to step up my game!

P.S- I’ve always thought you’ve made it very clear when you’ve had stuff sent to you and I trust your reviews whole-heartedly x

    1. Thanks Jess! Trust me, I’m the QUEEN of lack of self-control! Diana Ferrari’s got some gorgeous dresses, haven’t they? What did you get?

      1. The one I got for 75% off is a wrap dress with short ruffled sleeves and a tie waist and a black and white small print. The other one is a three quarter sleeve wrap dress with a really dynamic red and beige print and tie waist. Both very nice, both good for work and play depending on accessories. But I think I’m going to have to have a Frockapalooza myself! I just moved in with my boyfriend and he has a walk-in wardrobe (be still my beating heart). About 10 per cent of it is his, and 90 per cent is my stuff!

  8. Lilli, both the skirt and hair tie are more than welcome to make their way into my closet! OMG, that skirt is fantastic! I think A line skirts flatter a curvy girl’s shape like no other. You look amazing!

  9. The wire in the head band is SUCH a great idea.. I’ve never been able to keep slippery silk scarves tied in my hair.. might see if I can try this at home 🙂

  10. I just found your blog and i want to say i love your style, you show me that a girl can look good in a bigger size, thanks for that!
I have a bigger size too, i have i think the same shape as you.
    Have a nice weekend
    Maria
