I’m quite lazy when it comes to my beauty routine, and I always try to find shortcuts when I can.

I wear BB Cream, because it works as a moisturiser, an  SPF30+suncream, and a foundation (this one’s my favourite). I got laser hair removal because I was sick of shaving my legs every day. And I’m incapable of finding a mascara that doing end up all over my cheekbones within an hour. So I get my eyelashes tinted.

Since I moved away from the CBD I needed to find a new salon locally that did eyelash tinting so I was thrilled to discover a placed called “Play: Brow and Lash Bar” just around the corner. While I was there I decided to have my eyebrows “threaded” as well.

You don’t see them much, because of my fringe, but my eyebrows are naturally quite sparse, especially at the edges where they lose all definition.

Me. Before I discovered tweezers. That baby is allowed to drink and vote now. That tells you how long ago it was!

When I didn’t have the fringe I got them professionally shaped and tinted (because, lazy) but since growing the fringe in I’ve been kind of taking care of them myself. Which of course, meant that they were a bit of a disaster zone.

The girls at Play were really friendly and attentive, and explained very patiently to me where I was going wrong in my technique. One eyebrow was arched, the other curved, the gap between them was too wide for my face, and they were a bit uneven. They gave me a game plan for upkeep, and then tidied them up for me.

I don’t know if any of you have tried threading, but I can give it the two thumbs up. It’s not quite as quick at waxing; but it’s more precise, not nearly as messy, and you don’t end up with two angry splodges of red on your forehead for the rest of the day.

My eyelash tint was seamless too, and my consultant was very attentive, making careful sure that the dye hadn’t seeped into my eyes and wasn’t stinging.

Play’s been around for less than a year in both South Yarra and Fitzroy, but I’ll definitely be back, and I thoroughly recommend it for anyone locally looking for lash and brow services in a friendly, laid-back, non-pretentious environment.

Today’s outfit was all soft and gold and cuddly and discreetly glittery.

I wore the draped wool skirt that I made for myself a couple of years ago. I teamed it with my remixed cashmere cardigan with the sequinned elbow patches and a t-shirt from Gorman with gold polkadots.

My most OTT bit of bling was this amazing rhinestone collar that I bought ages ago from Lovisa, and have never had the courage to wear before.DSCF1142_2The fabric of this necklace is actually quite a soft cotton, and it ties up at the back with a tatty bit of chiffon fabric. There’s a bit of faded glamour about it that appeals to me, but I haven’t been able to find the outfit that it works with yet.

This is OK, but still not perfect. How would you wear it?

  1. Hello, lovely! I’m a BB cream devotee, too. I’ve yet to find anything that makes my skin look quite as flawless, or feel quite as soft. Even on those days when I feel too lazy to do my make up in its entirety (and I have those days a lot!) I usually make time to put on BB cream. It’s good for my skin, and it makes me look a more well-rested… which is always nice since I’m a terrible sleeper, and usually only get 3 or 4 hours a night.

ANYWAY, I always love seeing your lovely face on your blog! Hugs!

  2. I think I’d try that collar with a navy top– either something with a crew neck, so it would lay flat and become a part of the top, or something with a scoop so it would echo the scoop. (I keep wanting to type schoop. Hee.)

Or, it would be really cute inside the neckline of a button-down men’s shirt? Nice mix of masculine and feminine. 🙂

  3. I have massive probs with mascara staying power too – so when I find one that sticks I’m happy to share – YSL. It’s super expensive, but as you are venturing into duty-free land soon, I thought you might want to check it out. I have the black and purple waterproof, and they are the bomb. And it comes off easily too.

Necklace? Over any round necked top with a flat sewn collar so it sits right. I think the cardy moves it around and prob makes you feel a bit ‘meh’ about it. Or if it’s the right shape, try it under a pan collared blouse?

  4. Try Lush’s new Eyes Right mascara – it’s cheap, compact, full of good ingredients and leaves out the usual nasties. It’s got me back into the habit of wearing mascara!

  5. What a lovely ensemble! the necklace is gorgeous and “faded glamour” is spot-on way to describe it. although i love the combination of cream and sparkly, I think a color of dusty rose (a little bit pink a little bit grey) would also work nicely.

also- i love your bangs. my forehead is so small (short?) i can’t wear my hair like this and bangs have been my secret passion since i was 6! 🙂

  6. I do love that gold dotty t shirt and your cardi! I’m jealous if people with eyebrows- mine are mainly blonde with brown only in the inner area- would love beautiful thick shapeable eyebrows! So jealous!!!
I love the necklace- navy t shirt with v neck cardi? Or a think crisp white shirt buttoned up and the necklace over the top? Or pink or grey or white tee?

  7. I would definitely wear that collar with a somewhat low-cut black shirt – it gives the collar the chance to really stand out.

  8. I have a similar collar (slightly less sparkly) which I wear with a navy dress with a low-ish square neckline. It’s more of an evening look, but it kind of makes a frame for the collar and makes a feature of it. Your outfit is really pretty though! 🙂

  9. The necklace looks cute with the outfit but I think it will look gorgeous with that wide scoop neck black shift dress that you got from Jiminie. The dress looks amazing on you and the necklace will be the focal point; super chic!!!

  10. Well I’m a plucker myself (!) and kinda overplucked in my teens. I’ve been properly trying to grow my eyebrows back for the past 2 years but I think the previous 18 years of plucking has taken it’s toll and it’s very slow progress. There’s just a patch I’d like to fill under my brow to make them less arched and create a better shape, but it’s not really working. I can’t really fill it in in the meantime because it would just be obvious pencil or powder on skin and look terrible, anyway don’t mean to bore you with my brows or lack of! Have never tried threading, the thought sounds painful and I’m pretty averse to that, besides i rarely have to pluck these days anyway! Lovely to see you in your heart patch cardi : )

  11. I echo what Danielle said above….I’d wear it with a nice v-neck or scoop neck black t-shirt or wrap dress. Something to draw attention to the necklace! I think a cute pair of dark wash jeans, the black shirt, that collar, a small pair of gold earrings, and some cute flats. Now I want a necklace/collar like that!

  12. A magnificent outfit.
Would look good with some boots for winter, too.
Statement necklaces should be worn more often, they always draw a lot of compliments. I prefer a bit of a blank canvas.
could be bold and go gold on gold???? Contrasting golds/metallics?? Leopard print with Jeans and sandals for a rock-n-roll ladies night?
Lilli, you were such a lovely teenager, but it takes a while for a person to grow into their beauty, particularly if they are not cookie-cutter pretty. I would say you are hitting your stride.
Eye-catching can be many different things. It is very subjective. Viva heterogeneity!

  13. Hi Lilli,

I know you posted this message a little while ago, but just flicking back a bit and wanted to let you know that ‘The Mascara’ by Kevyn Aucoin available through Mecca cosmetica is really good. I always had raccoon eyes from wearing the stuff until I tried this one. It sets on your lashes and doesn’t really come off until you sort of ‘peel’ it off.
    Cheers, K
