Stars In My Eyes, Help Me Decide

Yay! The fabric that I ordered from Spoonflower has arrived!

When I was putting together my last Lust List I found a range of fabrics on Spoonflower that had been printed with images taken by the Hubble telescope.

It took me a while, but I finally decided to buy two yards in the silk-cotton blend.

The fabric’s a bit shinier than I anticipated and the print not quite as rich in colour, but I’m still completely delighted.

Two yards is pretty much enough to make anything I want, but now the fabric’s in my hot little hands I can’t decide.

So I thought I’d throw it out to you guys!

A Maxi Skirt:

I quite like this look, but I don’t know if it’s something I would wear very often. I’ve never really worn maxi skirts, as they often make me look shorter and stockier than I am.

An A-Line Skirt

I know I’d wear this, and it would be ridiculously easy to make. I’m not sure what I’d wear it WITH though, and it’s a pretty generic style for such an amazing print.

A Full, Gathered Skirt

With such an eye-catching print, a big full skirt might be overkill. And again, I’m not sure what I’d wear up top.

Dress

I’m kind of leaning towards making another Macaron dress, though I would have to decide what colour to make the shoulders. And I’m tempted to swap the pleated skirt for an a-line one.

Let me know what you think in the comments!

  1. Definitely the A line skirt. But that’s the style that would suit me the most, so the other thing I would suggest is a dress, so you can get the full effect of the fabric.

    It’s beautiful.

  2. Hi! I really love the print! I would also go for the A-line skirt, I don’t think it’d be too hard to pair up with many tops, perhaps a silky black fabric top for example, but definitely a more plain coloured top so the skirt shines through! However, the macaron dress might also be lovely with the A-line skirt instead of the pleated skirt. I’d possibly go for a very light blue fabric for the shoulders. Though for some odd reason, and perhaps it’s just me, but I’d think that this fabric may not really suit a macaron type dress?

  3. A-line! You have gorgeous legs and that is the best length for you (yeah yeah,I know everything about “knees”, but come on! ;-)) ah! make 2 of them! 🙂
White shirt, blue shirt, silver shirt ;-P there is so many
    love!

    1. so many options. (that’s what I meant to write!)
Btw 😉 I had a dream in which you were the one to organize my wedding ;-P if you get tired of your current job, then definitely try wedding department 😀

  4. A line or gathered skirt or a dres but maybe without the sheer shoulders…the material is lovely and glossy and bright and oh I love it!!! Cant wait to see what you make! Wear it with black, white, silver, gold…..anything!

  5. Macaron dress, easily! The sheer fabric in a beautiful navy or dark blue would be lovely. I really love this galaxy print trend!

  6. A-line skirt! It looks so cute, and is just the right amount of impact without going OTT.

You said in the previous macaron dress post that you’d want to use a more easy-wear fabric next time to avoid crumpling, and the new fabric doesn’t fit that bill!

  7. I love a pattern heavy a-line skirt. You can dress it up or down and layer with different colors depending on your mood. The pattern has a lot of colors so if you were feeling especially flirt you could use a lower neckline and a brighter color. 🙂

  8. The first thing I thought of when I saw your first photo was Leona Edmiston’s “Shona Shirtdress”- it’s the red dress in this post: http://scarletwords.com/2009/11/14/leona-edmiston/

I think this print would be PERFECT for this kind of style! Or you could make the neckline a scoop, and add a solid coloured knit top to convert it to a gathered skirt when it suits you. I do this a lot with my dresses.

All of the options you suggested sound great though. Although I think maxi skirts need a good amount of stretch in the fabric to be really flattering.

    How exciting!

  9. A line skirt or dress. Definitely. I think you would get more wear out of the skirt though – it could easily be paired with a tank top in black or petrol or a crisp white shirt or with a fitted jacket…

    K xx

  10. I say make a “macaroon”, or, since you’d make it with an A-line skirt, how about a “peony”? You needn’t make the sash and you could use the same fabric throughout. It’s a pretty dress with a bateau neckline that would give you some variety.

I also say definitely don’t make a gathered skirt – you can’t appreciate the fabric’s lovely pattern well in that one. And, if you already know you don’t feel lovely when you put on a maxi skirt, then don’t make that either. This is special fabric with meaning; best to make something that you already feel happy about rather than try to force something.

No matter what, it will be lovely though. I’m keen to hear more about how the fabric feels and how it is to work with too.

  11. Macaron dress!! With maybe a sheer navy sleeves? It’s a beautiful pattern! The A line skirt is great too, but i love your macaron dresses! 🙂

  12. Go with the A Line… you’ll wear it more because it’s more versatile… crisp white shirt on top for business…. sweaters and tees for play. You must find someone who makes a Starship Enterprise pin to wear with it though! And RED shoes!!!

  13. Dress!! The previous dress with sheer sleeves was gorgeous. It would be a shame not to use that fabric as one solid dress. Sleeves could be blue, brown, or white? Great fabric, can’t wait to see what you make with it!

  14. Oh, the A-line skirt, definitely! It looks so pretty, it’s a great length, it showcases the print wonderfully. It’s not generic, it’s classic! And you can dress it up or down, too.

  15. Incredible fabric! I vote for A-line, because the fabric is such a showstopper. A simple design will put all the attention on the print. And make pillows with the extra fabric so you can LOOK at that gorgeous fabric all the time!

  16. I vote A line skirt.

It is the style that flatters you the most, PLUS then there would be enough fabric to make either a carry bag or faux collar or perhaps BOTH.

    🙂

  17. I like the full/gathered option, possible with a slightly oversized waistband. I think you could wear it with black, blue, silver and even dusky pink/mauve coloured tops tucked it. I like the 50s silhouette with a novelty print. You could even add astronomical accessories – a star-shaped belt buckle? A comet brooch, or pehaps my favourite, a Victorian bohemian garnet star and moon pin? http://img3.etsystatic.com/000/0/6239203/il_fullxfull.338547839.jpg (Divine!)

Also though, a vintage capelet could be kind of marvelous, perhaps with reversible sides? http://images.wikia.com/vintagepatterns/images/e/ec/V1273A.jpg, http://ny-image0.etsy.com/il_430xN.31938948.jpg, http://images2.chictopia.com/photos/thefamilyvintage/1364144848/blue-vintage-jacket_400.jpg Imagine the fund you could have with buttons and closures!

  18. I would definitely recommend a dress – makes the most of the fabric and you won’t have to worry about what to wear it with! Not 100% sure about the style of dress, but if you were going with the Macaron I’d make the sheer bit a dark blue/navy colour. Maybe you can forgo the sheer and just make it all out of this??

  19. no question, the macaron dress! with the shoulders in a sheer fabric of that midnight blue, or a dove-grey.

  20. How about a “two for the price of one” deal. An A line skirt would be great however with the left over material make a blouse with sheer shoulders. Not to wear together of course however the blouse would look amazing with jeans especially if you team it with sheer blue material for the yoke and shoulders.

Can’t wait to see the end product !!!

  21. Long(ish) time lurker, first time commenter.
First let me send my best wishes to your sister – I know what it is to have a really unwell sister, and all I can do is offer my best wishes to her, and to you as her supporter.
I liked the A line skirt. Some of Ella’s suggestions are great as well (you could make a great reversible coat or coat lining)

  22. What gorgeous fabric. No wonder you are excited 🙂 Me, I’d go for the A-line skirt, as that is easiest to pair up with tops. I can’t wait to see what you make though, no matter what it is.

  23. Oh I love that fabric. It would look great all those ways but I particularly love it as a gathered skirt. I’m obsessed with galaxy prints at the moment.

  24. I say the dress. That fabric is too gorgeous to waste. Plus, it would be difficult to find a top to match a skirt. A plain black or white top would not do that fabric justice!

  25. Gorgeous fabric, and the space theme makes me think 1960s (though of course the photography is much more recent) and even a hint of sci-fi. I can picture the A-line skirt (nice flat surface to show off the print) with a simple black or navy top and one or two strong pieces of silver jewellery. You’re a good judge of how to avoid a costumey look.

  26. I vote A-line! I think such a bold pattern is good in a small and sexy dose. And with the leftover fabric make a scarf, a headband, and an outfit for Suki.

  27. I’d vote for an a-line skirt or a simple dress. They’re simple shapes, but you don’t want to add too many fripperies to that great fabric. Let it shine! I’d pair it with a lavender, most solar system photos have these great lavenders in them that I love, and I think it would be less expected than white or navy or black.

  28. I have a wrap dress with three quarter levees and a surplice neckline in an almost identical jersey print dress by Leona Edmson, it’s stunning, so I vote wrap dress if the material has stretch. It’s called ‘ galaxy’ print

  29. I love the maxi skirt! For years I didn’t wear them because I’m pretty short (5″4), but sometimes they do work! But the dress seems to be the most practical option, and one you’d probably get more wear out of. Also, it’s getting the most votes!

  30. I vote the dress as well, yes it’s not going to be as versatile but with such a striking fabric it’s not like you can really wear it that often. No matter what you pair it with people will always remember that skirt so I feel you will be just as limited wearing it as the dress which would be beautiful.

  31. Have you already decided?? It sings out to be a gorgeous shift dress! Or with sleeves? 🙂 That sheeny fabric is almost like leather – a real statement-maker as a dress.

    xo

  32. Crazily, I just got nearly the exact same hubble print material from Spoonflower myself! Mine is more purple but it arrived this week and I’m stumped for what to do with it too! I honestly think a pleated full skirt would look delightful and would mean you’d be getting a lot of wear out it but I wish you the best of luck with whatever you decide to make!
