Pattern Recognition

Β Blouse: Harris Scarfe

Skirt: City Chic

Shoes: Wittner

I wasn’t sure this combination of prints would actually work together, but the result’s not too bad.

I bought this stripy nautical skirt from City Chic almost as soon as it came out, but it’s a piece I actually have a lot of trouble dressing with. The stripes are perhaps just a modicum too slender, and if I’m being honest I would have preferred navy blue to black.

I’ve tried to wear it with both black and red t-shirts, but they looked odd tucked in, and left loose over the waistband of the skirt, and my body looked oddly propotioned.

No, I’m afraid that this skirt is a one-hit-wonder, and probably won’t be the Essential Summer Item I’d envisaged when I first bought it.

So, in other news, The Sophisticate and I spent the weekend away – we flew up to Sydney, then drove down to Nowra to suss out our wedding venue for the first time (amazing, BTW)

We took lots of photos… did you want a sneak peek, or did you want to wait until February for The Big Reveal?

  1. Hi Lillie, first time I leave a comment here. I fell in love with your blog and your style just at the moment I spotted you in a German magazine. You so much inspire me! And I do like today’s combination and I just had a crazy idea. Did you try the skirt with a flower printed blouse (like the one from Michelle Tan)? Maybe that works. Greetings from Germany.
P.S. I’d like to wait for The Big Reveal :).

    1. Yes, I was going to say your hair looks super lovely too!

I’ve been focussing some attention lately on my hair – cheaper than buying clothes! I just can’t get the little beehive you’re rocking to work. Oh well, I’ll keep trying. I want to wear it Christmas day.

Great work, a really gorgeous outfit.

  2. I love the skirt! You totally pull off the pattern mixing look (I never seem to be able to!). I can’t believe that the skirt does not look gorgeous with plain coloured t-shirts. How about with one of your fab cardis?

Wonderful wedding venue choice, Lilli. I went to a wedding there not so long ago & it was utterly divine. You must be so excited to have seen where you will have your big day…the weather in Sydney last weekend was perfect so it must have been looking spectacular!

    1. Thanks Jo – The weather was AMAZING, wasn’t it? There was another wedding there that day, so we got to have a sneak peek at the place all set up. Looks gorgeous – hope we have just as nice a day, and it’s not TOO stinky hot!

  3. WOW you look so posh, so very Melbourne. Love this outfit Lilli. I am such a coward, couldn’t make myself buy this skirt. And the blouse if fab. And I was wondering what were you upto as it’s been more than a week since your last post. So excited about your wedding. May everything goes well xoxo

    1. Thanks, Amna! I’ve been so lax with my blogging lately! I feel like everything I’m doing at the moment is wedding orientated and all my conversation has become wedding-related too. I’ve become THAT (boring) girl!

  4. Firstly wedding venue – SNEAK PEAK PLEASE! I hate surprises or waiting for things so even if you just email direct I’d love to have a gander!!

As for the outfit – I love it! I can also see why the shirt would be a pain… With the monochrome stripe though you could try it with colour patterns as well – especially blouses. I love your hair at the moment – even though I voted that you go short again. πŸ™‚

  5. Lilli

You look STUNNING in this outfit. I just had to say. Gorgeous….Sneak peek? Hells Yes!! Although just as fun to wait til feb….

Quick question….Hair (Amazeballs by the way), how did you do it??

    Loving your blog from here

  6. Where did you find that venue!? I live in the Illawarra and am desperately looking for a nice wedding venue that can manage a 250 strong party. My only requirement at this stage is that the venue has windows! Obviously these beautiful places are out there – how did you find it??

    1. Hi Kristy. We’re very fortunate. It’s actually my uncle’s property, so we’re getting a pretty good family discount. It’d be way out of our budget otherwise. I think they only do up to 140 guests (from memory) but you could email Rosi and ask her if they could do more?

  7. I saw this last night and you inspired me! I have the same skirt and like you think the stripes are a little too small to truly be a great skirt but today I am wearing with a polka dot black and white blouse and with a wide red belt! Love it! Thanks for the inspiration =]

  8. OMG Lil… I am from Wollongong and the fiancΓ© and I have been dreaming about terara estate (since before we even got engaged)
I swear we have the same taste!

Oh – thanks for your help re antique engagement ring hunt in melb.
We ended up finding “the one” at Keshett on little Collins street.

    1. How exciting! I’m so glad you found one, Tammy. Terrara’s SO beautiful, isn’t it? My uncle owns it, other wise we wouldn’t stand a CHANCE of getting it. Way out of our budget.

  9. Also discovered your blog recently (although have stalked all your backpages and commented a way back) Sneak peak sneak peak!!

And I also think you look fabbo today. Don’t give up on that skirt yet!

  10. As always, you pull off this look beautifully. I too have struggled to dress a striped (although maxi) skirt I have resently purchased.

Also wanted to give a huge shout for Terrara house. My friends recently had their reception there and it was fantastic in every way. You will love it!

    1. Thanks Alicia! I’m very spoilt – the owners of the house are my uncle & his partner, so we’re getting mate’s rates. NO WAY we’d be able to afford it otherwise. It’s gorgeous!

  11. Love this combo-loks sleek and stylish and a little quirky!
Would love to see the skirt with a red patterned blouse or as suggested the floral one….or green…green would look great!!!
I have lots of friends who are married and I loved hearing them talk about the wedding to come- not boring at all!

  12. oooh Terrara House! lovely! I’m originally from Nowra and my family have some tie to Terrara but I cant remember what it is… I do remember stopping there for dessert on a progressive dinner many years ago though πŸ™‚

  13. Far better than “not bad” – this is a gorgeous outfit! I love the prints together. I am also having a struggle with a horizontal striped maxi, but thankfully have one top that works with it (whew!) – again has to be tucked in and belted…
Love love love Terrara – I lived in Nowra and later Gerringong for years – you will love it xx

  14. Catching up on your blog a bit late, but just wanted to take a minute to say I really like this outfit on you, especially with the hairdo. That top photo is stunning. πŸ™‚

  15. I’m a super late responder, I’ve been following your blog for awhile and always am late with my comments. I just wanted to tell you how lovely I think this outfit is, I think if I could raid anyone’s closet in the entire world, your closet would be my first choice. You are so pretty and I love this outfit, you give me outfit inspiration.
