Frugal February: Bees Knees

Shoes: Zu Shoes
Headband: Mimco
I love Dorothy Perkins, but why oh why are their dresses always so bloody short? Also, I suspect their fit model is a bit of a freak, because things never seem to fit quite correctly (unless I’m the freak, I suppose…).
This dress for instance – it’s non-stretch so I sized up, rationalising that with the tie back it would be better to get a larger size and tie it tighter than a smaller one and have it not fit. When it arrived it was extraordinarily voluminous around the shoulders and arms, slightly less voluminous around the waist and about what I expected around the hips. Which would be great if I were an inverted triangle, but I’m not so I had to do a bit of dress surgery to bring the sides in by inches.
Nothing can help the short hem though, so my knees (not my favourite part of my body) are on full display.
I do love it though… Spots! Stripes! Lace! What part of that is not screaming my name?

  1. Maybe if your knees want not to be on display you could add some matching lace to the hem, to obscure them!! Buying without trying is fraught with danger, but this dress worked out pretty well!!

  2. Why donΒ΄t you like your knees? I canΒ΄t see anything wrong with them…

Cute dress btw. I love Dorothy Perkins!

    xx πŸ™‚ xx

  3. Nothing at all wrong with your knees – they're lovely. However, if you're really not comfortable with them I bet this dress would look darling with some capri-length leggings, too.

  4. funny, the same dress arrived at my home about a week ago. and i had the same issues about the fit, so there are two of us freaks now ^^.

  5. This dress is making me pray for the magical debt relief god to visit, so that I can start spending my hard earned cash on lovely clothes instead of mortgages, bills, and paying off Harvey Norman accounts!

Don't worry about your knees, no-one else is noticing.

  6. Love your blog! Stayed up so late last night going to all your shopping sites. You're a great advertisement for them (even if you don't intend to be) and inspiring for style creation .. which normally doesn't inspire me.

    Thanks! πŸ™‚

  7. You look great! I lovelovelove that dress but after reading your review I won't be purchasing it. Looks amazing on you though!!

  8. Hey Lilli, agree with 2paw…maybe add a few inches to the bottom, but I was thinking instead of lace, which could be hard to much, what about a bit of plain old cotton in the right blue??
Love it anyway – Shakespeare could have written a sonnet about that glorious collar!

  9. It looks really cute on you…now I am really put off buying Dorothy Perkins stuff because I am not a sewer at all…:(

  10. Thanks 2paw – I'll keep my eye out for some crochet style lace or Hayley's idea of cotton & see how it looks, otherwise I like Katie's suggestion that I try it with some leggings too – maybe my white ones – leggings ALWAYS make me feel better about short skirts!

Thanks Rebequita Rose πŸ™‚ Don't know why I don't love my knees… just one of those things, I guess.

Thanks Bethamint & Totally Inspired πŸ™‚

It's a great collar isn't it, Bellisimama – that's exactly what sold it to me, too.

    Thanks Jen!

That's a relief to know 10ada01! Sometimes things fit so oddly, I just have to think WTF?

LOL @ Alexis – I have to admit I've been put off by their short hems before.

    Thanks, D_H πŸ™‚

That's great Layla – I'm so glad you're enjoying it!

Linzzzy & Bowsnhearts – don't be too put off by trying Dorothy Perkins, they've got a really good returns system and when things work, they WORK, you know?
